Ortega takes another step closer to re-election

Nicaragua's main opposition Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC) has officially ratified the disgraced ex President Arnoldo Alemán (1997-2002) as its presidential candidate, ahead of elections in November 2011. With Alemán widely considered the chief obstacle to a united opposition, not least through his decade-old power sharing deal 'El Pacto' with President Daniel Ortega, his nomination suggests Ortega is one step closer to achieving his illegal bid for re-election.
