The national electoral council (CNE) has officially called the 2017 general election, which will take place on 19 February next year. A second presidential round run-off is required if a candidate fails to secure an absolutely majority (50% plus one), or 40% with a 10-percentage-point lead over the second-placed runner. If required, a second round will be held on 2 April, with a new government to be sworn in (for a five-year term) on 24 May.
