Argentina: On 14 November Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri spoke via telephone with US President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory in the 8 November US elections. According to a press release by the Argentine presidency, the talk lasted for around 15 minutes, in which the two men discussed their long-standing personal and professional relationship, as well as agreeing to work towards a mutually beneficial agenda between the two nations. Macri stated that he looked forward to welcoming Trump for the ‘G-20’ meeting scheduled to be held in Argentina in 2018, whilst Trump invited Macri to visit Washington DC before that date. Macri and Trump’s long-standing relationship goes back to the 1980s, when Trump was involved in some business deals with a construction firm owned by Macri’s father, in which the President Macri worked in before entering politics. But during the US electoral campaign, Macri expressed support for Trump’s rival, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. However, following their phone conversation, Trump reportedly stated that Argentina is a “great nation” and that the two leaders and their nations would in future have the closest relationship than ever before.
