Brazil: Going off-script?

The optimistic narrative on Brazil for most of this year has been simple. It calls for new President Michel Temer to stabilise the political crisis, push through necessary fiscal reforms and deliver an economic recovery in 2017, ahead of new general elections in 2018. But in late 2016, it looked as if the country was veering off-script. With political crisis heating up again, Temer’s own future was in doubt, and the recovery once more looked under threat.
