Nicaragua and Russia shore up ties

Earlier this month Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega and top officials from his Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government hosted Russia’s deputy prime minister, Dmitri Rogozin. The latest sign of strengthening ties since Ortega took office for a second time in 2007, the visit by Rogozin – who also met the general commander of Nicaragua’s armed forces, General Julio César Aviles – attracted attention given controversy earlier this year following the announcement of the country’s purchase of 50 Russian tanks.
