Haiti's presidential and legislative elections were held on 28
November. That in itself is no small achievement. The Organization of American
States (OAS), which sent electoral observers, also concluded that they should
stand as they were “valid". The majority of the 18 opposition presidential
candidates reached a very different conclusion, claiming widespread fraud and
demanding that the elections be annulled. But, when unofficial word got out that
President René Préval's candidate, Jude Célestin, might not even make the
run-off, his two closest challengers, Mirlande Manigat and Michel 'Sweet Micky'
Martelly, backtracked and promised to abide by the results, which should be
published on 7 December.End of preview - This article contains approximately 726 words.
