REGION: Defence of democracy

Two important events took place either side of the Andes on 3 December. The main message to emerge from both was the need to defend democracy. This is not as self-evident as it seems. Not so long ago the release in Santiago, Chile, of the Latinobarómetro poll showed an alarming support for authoritarian governments across the region but it now displays a steady increase in support for democracy. Meanwhile, regional heads of state met in Mar del Plata, Argentina, for the Ibero-American summit, in which education - the supposed focus - took a back seat to the drafting of a declaration to defend democracy. Both the Latinobarómetro poll and the summit declaration showed that the main debate is no longer about democracy per se but rather the interpretation of democracy in practice.
