MEXICO | WikiLeaks. The designated publishers of the WikiLeaks US State Department cables started publishing material on Mexico on 2 December. The first half dozen (of the 2,500) Mexico cables to be published show the US officials to be scathing about President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa. Calderón's well-known sensitivity to any criticism means that the publication will further complicate US-Mexican relations. The most damaging publication is that of a cable dated 4 December 2009 requesting information from the US embassy in Mexico City about Calderón's mental state. The request, apparently, came from the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, who said that the State Department understood that Calderón and his government were under huge stress because of the (failing) war against drugs and “the economic collapse". What is tantalising is that the US embassy's response to this request has yet to be published.
