Introduction

A decade of democratic rule – albeit with some pronounced authoritarian tendencies – came to an end on 24 May 2017 when President Rafael Correa stepped down from office. Although he handed over the Presidency to a hand-picked successor, Lenín Moreno, who won the elections at the head of the ruling Alianza PAIS (AP), the fate of the ‘citizens’ revolution’ Correa had launched in the country remained uncertain. In this report we look at the political changes and options facing Ecuador.
