The 2017 election

The 2017 general elections offer a snapshot of the balance of political forces in the country in the early part of this year. They were held in two rounds, on 19 February and on 2 April. The first round was won by former vice president Lenín Moreno, as the candidate of the governing Alianza PAIS (AP) party, on the political left, with 39.36% of the vote. Guillermo Lasso of the right-wing CREO party, with 28.09%, took second place. This result meant that a second-round run-off ballot was necessary.
