Policy towards indigenous groups

On taking office Moreno set about improving relations with Ecuador’s indigenous communities, which had reached a low point during the Correa administration. In July, the new president met 60 representatives of the Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas (Conaie). Jorge Herrera, the president of Conaie, said that the organisation would participate in the “national dialogue” that Moreno was promoting. Conaie has been campaigning for reforms to land ownership laws to better recognise the ancestral rights of its communities. The organisation also wants reform of water rights, to make it more difficult for large agribusiness and mining companies to secure priority access to water at their expense.
