Peru: The government has ratified the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO)’s Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. Peru’s permanent representative before the FAO, Luis Iberico, said that ratification of the agreement, which makes it incumbent on signatories to take measures in their ports to combat illegal fishing, underlines Peru’s commitment to leading a “frontal fight” against unregulated fishing. According to the FAO, 26m tonnes of fish are illegally fished every year, equivalent to 15% of global annual fish production and estimated to produce US$23bn a year in economic losses as well as threatening marine biodiversity and food security in many countries.
