Venezuela: On 23 October, the US Department of State announced the lifting of its 27 July order for the departure of all eligible family members and authorised personnel posted in the US embassy in Venezuela due to concerns about violence and social unrest in the Andean country. A US Department of State statement said that while the political situation and security in the country remains unpredictable, and there is a latent risk of a resurgence of the violent confrontations observed in the streets of Venezuela in April-August between anti-government protestors and the security forces in which some 160 people were killed, US government personnel and family members can now return to Venezuela. However, the statement reminds all US embassy personnel that they are subject to embassy movement policy that limits their travel within Caracas and many parts of the country. The statement also renews a Venezuela travel warning for US citizens advising them not to travel to Venezuela as “violence and criminal activity - including homicide, armed robbery, kidnapping, and carjacking - pose significant and continuing security concerns”.
