HAITI: At last a resolution, albeit imperfect

Haiti will stage a second round run-off between former first lady Mirlande Manigat and komba musician Michel Martelly. It will take place on 20 March. President René Préval's chosen candidate, Jude Célestin, will be excluded from this contest. Préval made it known on 7 February, the day his mandate was scheduled to conclude, that he would remain in power until 14 May in keeping with a controversial ruling by parliament last year. There were some minor protests in Port-au-Prince, but having exerted huge pressure to see Célestin eliminated, the international community, led by the US and the Organization of American States (OAS), decided that it could, after all, live with this.
