Haiti will stage a second round run-off between former first lady
Mirlande Manigat and komba musician Michel Martelly. It will take place on 20
March. President René Préval's chosen candidate, Jude Célestin, will be excluded
from this contest. Préval made it known on 7 February, the day his mandate was
scheduled to conclude, that he would remain in power until 14 May in keeping
with a controversial ruling by parliament last year. There were some minor
protests in Port-au-Prince, but having exerted huge pressure to see Célestin
eliminated, the international community, led by the US and the Organization of
American States (OAS), decided that it could, after all, live with
