In brief: Uruguay

Uruguay: The Federación de Obreros de la Industria de las Carnes y Afines (Foica), the local union of abattoir workers, has confirmed the launch of a 48-hour strike starting today (29 November). The strike was called following the layoff of 68 workers from the Frigorífico Solís abattoir located in Lavalleja department earlier this month due to a fall in activity. The Frigorífico Solís workers rejected the firm’s actions and called for the establishment of a tripartite negotiation table with the firm and representatives from the labour ministry (MTSS) to try to find an alternative solution. However, these tripartite negotiations have broken down. Foica’s announcement has been repudiated by the meat industry chamber (CIF) and the association of abattoirs (Adifu), which have described the move as “abusive and unprecedented”.
