BRAZIL: Brazil's charming new diplomacy


After meeting Brazil's foreign minister Antônio Patriota in Washington on 24 February, the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, expressed warm praise and admiration for Brazil's “growing leadership in the world" and said she was ready for a “constructive dialogue" about Brazil's future in the UN, where it is seeking a permanent seat on a reformed UN Security Council. Her effusiveness was in marked contrast to May 2010, when she admitted to “serious disagreements" with Brazil over Iran, which marked a very public souring in relations.
