TRACKING TRENDS

GUYANA | PNCR presidential candidate elected. The main opposition People's National Congress - Reform (PNCR) has selected Brigadier (ret.) David Granger as its presidential candidate ahead of the August 2011 presidential and parliamentary election. In the 26 February primaries, Granger, the former commander of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), narrowly defeated the former finance minister, Carl Greenidge, to win the party candidacy by 279-264 out of a possible 666 votes. The People's Progressive Party (PPP) of President Bharrat Jagdeo, which has ruled the country since 1992, has yet to decide upon a candidate. With Jagdeo constitutionally barred from seeking a third term, there are currently five PPP hopefuls jostling for the nomination: PPP General Secretary Donald Ramotar; speaker of the house, Ralph Ramkarran; Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee; a presidential adviser, Gail Teixeira; and former information minister, Moses Nagamootoo.
