In brief: Mexico

*The commission for dialogue with indigenous peoples (CDPI), an official body, has reported that currently there are 335 active conflicts implicating indigenous peoples in 29 of Mexico’s 32 states. According to the CDPI, these conflicts are mostly related to land disputes and opposition to mining projects, issues which have a “direct relation to the violation of [indigenous peoples’] rights to land and the exploitation of natural resources”. The CDPI warns that many of these conflicts are legacy conflicts and that the authorities’ failure to resolve them have led to them remaining as sources of tension with Mexico’s indigenous population.
