MEXICO: Calderón suggests outsider

President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa suggested on 5 March that the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) should choose the best candidate for the presidential elections in 2012, even if that person is not a Panista. This suggestion immediately triggered a row in the PAN. The party president, Gustavo Madero, rejected the idea straight away. More interestingly, Calderón's predecessor as president, Vicente Fox (2000-2006), endorsed the idea, even though Fox and Calderón have long had difficult personal and political relations.
