In brief: Colombia

Colombia: President Juan Manuel Santos has now sworn in 31 of the 38 magistrates for the transitional justice system (JEP) which will be used to try former members of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas under the peace agreement signed by the Santos government and the Farc in 2016. The remaining seven magistrates have not joined yet because they need to honour existing work commitments. Following the creation of the JEP, the Santos government hopes to investigate and penalise crimes related to the internal armed conflict in Colombia. They will offer guerrillas and other defendants the opportunity to participate in leniency agreements to negotiate a reduced sentence if they can provide accurate information.
