Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has turned the presidential contest on 10 April
into a five-horse race. Momentum at this stage of the race is crucial. While
support for Kuczynski is surging, that for his main rivals, former president
Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) and the former mayor of Lima, Luis Castañeda, is
ebbing away. Kuczynski has been rewarded for being the smoothest performer in
presidential debates. The only other candidate with momentum is Ollanta Humala,
the nationalist candidate, who, if his upwards trajectory continues, stands a
strong chance of overhauling Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of imprisoned former
president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), and sealing one of the two berths in the
inevitable second round in June.End of preview - This article contains approximately 728 words.
