Energy saving programme. President Leonel Fernández announced plans for converting at least 20,000 public transportation vehicles to natural gas, in order to help reduce the quantity of oil the country needs to import and reduce its vulnerability to high crude prices. He said the conversion would result in an annual reduction of around US$95m in the country's oil bill. Fernández also ordered public buildings to reduce energy consumption by 10%. In further cost-cutting measures, Fernández said that the government would not begin any new public works this year and would suspend tax exemptions of state institutions for 12 months.
