MEXICO: Calderón appoints first female to head PGR

On 31 March Arturo Chávez Chávez , Procurador General de la República, (and so the country's top lawman) resigned after just 18 months in the post. He was replaced by Marisela Morales Ibañez, who had been spearheading the Procuraduría's anti-gang effort, the Subprocuradoria de Investigación Especializada en Delincuencia Organizada (Siedo). Morales' appointment, which has to be ratified by the senate, is likely to set off a chain of significant moves: Miguel Ángel Yunes Linares, a close ally of Elba Esther Gordillo, the influential leader of the teachers' union, is likely to move to become head of the national intelligence service (Cisen), while the former head of the Cisen, Guillermo Valdés Castellanos, will, according to rumours in Mexico City, move to head the Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública, replacing Miguel Alcántara Soria, who, neatly, will take over from Morales at the Siedo.
