In brief: Mexico

*Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that he is willing to accelerate the ongoing renegotiations of the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) with the Mexican and US governments in order to avoid them becoming bogged down by Mexico’s 1 July general election and the US’s November mid-term elections. The US government led by President Donald Trump has complained that progress in the Nafta renegotiations has been too slow with Canadian and Mexican negotiators refusing to accept US demands. The Trump administration has also complained that the lack of progress could lead to the negotiations becoming completely stuck during Mexico’s electoral process and has called on both Canada and Mexico to do more to expedite the negogitiatons. “We’re happy to accelerate so we can accommodate them. Canada’s not the one creating time pressures at the table and we’ll continue to work at whatever speed others want,” Trudeau said in interview with Bloomberg Television. Trudeau added that he is still “very optimistic we’re going to be able to get a win-win-win” Nafta deal.
