DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Fernández resists temptation
It was a big gesture - and he made sure that everybody knew it.
President Leonel Fernández will not be seeking re-election in May 2012. He
delivered a speech to the nation on 8 April finally putting paid to months of
rumours that he might stand for office once again despite the constitution
explicitly barring this. Fernández explained that while he was convinced he
would win, he did not feel it was appropriate to run.
