In brief: Brazil

*The European Union (EU) has announced it will ban meat imports from 20 different production units in Brazil. This could lower Brazilian chicken exports to the EU by US$400m per year or around 30%-35%, according to local daily Folha de São Paulo. The worst hit company was BRF which owns 12 of the 20 units affected. An EU committee found Brazil’s health and safety checks were insufficient following the ‘Operation Weak Flesh’ scandal last year. The trade embargo will take effect fifteen days after the measure was announced on 19 April. Brazil’s agriculture minister, Blairo Maggi, said he would contest the decision and could file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
