Chile: Chile’s university student organisation Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile (Confech) has held its first national demonstration under the new right-of-centre Chile Vamos coalition government led by President Sebastián Piñera, which took office last month. According Confech, there was turnout of some 120,000 people in the capital, Santiago, alone for the march which was also organised by secondary school organisations Coordinadora Nacionales de Estudiantes Secundarios (Cones) and the Asamblea Coordinadora de Estudiantes Secundarios (Aces), and the teachers’ organisation Colegio de Profesores. As well as the more general demand for free universal higher education, the march was called in response to a 27 March ruling by Chile’s constitutional court (TC) against part of a law passed by the previous leftist Nueva Mayoría coalition government led by former president Michelle Bachelet (2006-2010; 2014-2018) that would have banned universities and higher education institutions from operating for profit.
