In brief: Mexico

*Mexican dairy company Grupo Lala has announced the temporary closure of its distribution centre in Ciudad Mante, a city in the north-eastern border state of Tamaulipas, citing the “lack of security conditions to maintain its functioning”. In a press release circulated to the local media, Grupo Lala said that activities had been stopped since 3 May after one of its vehicles was set alight the previous day. With 68 years of experience, Grupo Lala has 14 factories and 154 distribution centres in Mexico alone. According to figures from Mexico’s interior ministry (Segob), Tamaulipas had one of the highest homicide rates in 2017 at 22.22 per 100,000 inhabitants, above the national average of 20.51 per 100,000. This follows the March 2018 decision by multinational beverage company Coca-Cola Femsa to close its operations “indefinitely” at its distribution centre in Ciudad Altamirano,Guerrero state, citing the fact that its employees had been receiving “constant threats and acts of aggression from organised crime”.
