* The Uruguayan government has received three bids from international companies for a tender to build a new railway line linking the capital Montevideo with the city of Paso de los Toros in the central department of Tacuarembó. The government agreed to build the railway line as part of a deal struck with Finnish pulp maker UPM to build a second cellulose plant in Centenario, located in the central department of Durazno, which is close to Paso de los Toros. However, the minister for transport & public works, Víctor Rossi, stressed that the railway line would not be exclusively for UPM’s use and could also be used to transport wood, stones, grain, and other materials. The companies which have bid to build the central railway line include Spain’s Acciona, China’s CMEC-SDHS consortium, and the multinational Grupo Vía Central consortium. Rossi said his team would take 30 days to analyse the proposals before making a final decision.
