* Fábio Kanczuc, a secretary of economic policy at Brazil’s economy ministry, has announced that the recent lorry drivers’ strike has caused US$4.28bn worth of damage to Brazil’s economy. The drivers’ strike lasted from 21 May to 31 May 2018 and was in response to increased fuel prices. The strike paralysed Brazil’s roads causing shortages of food and consumer goods and forced businesses and airports to close. Kanczuc announced the figure, which is equivalent to 0.2% of Brazil’s GDP, when speaking on 11 June at the Fiscal Prism meeting, a quarterly meeting between representatives from the economy ministry and private sector economists.
