* Tourism sector activity in Mexico increased by 2.1% in the first quarter of the year compared with the same period in 2017, according to data released by the country’s national statistics institute (Inegi). Year-on-year tourist consumption increased by 2.4% between January and March. This increase was driven by internal tourism, as consumption from Mexican tourists increased by 3.8% year-on-year, whereas international tourists’ spending fell by 3.4% in the same period. However, there is now concern that tourism could be adversely affected by the unusually high presence of sargassum, a type of macroalgae, that is plaguing Mexico’s Caribbean coast. The invasion of sargassum sullies the appearance of beaches, and the algae emits a foul odour when decomposing, leading to fears that tourists will be deterred from returning to Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts.
