Food exports. Mexico’ agriculture minister, Baltazar Hinojosa Ochoa, said on 13 August that the country currently exports 20% more food than it imports. Official projections show agro-food exports of US$35bn this year, contributing to a US$6bn trade surplus in the sector. Hinojosa Ochoa hailed the figures, noting that thanks to the persistent work by the agricultural sector and the government to improve hygiene standards in the livestock sector in particular, Mexico is now the seventh-largest producer of animal proteins, coming in fifth for chicken production and sixth for beef production. Hinojosa Ochoa said that constant development of the sector had led to Mexico becoming a net food exporter since 2015 after two decades of being a net food importer.
