Uruguay: Military deployed to borders

The Uruguayan government has deployed the military to the country’s border areas in a bid to reinforce public security. The move comes following the approval of new piece of legislation that for the first time since the military dictatorship (1973-1985) allows the armed forces to carry out policing duties. The adoption of this drastic measure highlights just how much of a problem insecurity has become in Uruguay’s border areas, and that the authorities are now struggling to address it.
