Mexico: AMLO’s challenge - reducing the homicide numbers

There could not have been a crueller, more dramatic way of highlighting Mexico’s problem with an out-of-control murder rate. On 8 November the Chamber of Deputies had to suspend its session after Carmen Medel, a member of congress for the left wing Movimiento de Renovación Nacional (Morena) collapsed – she had just received a telephone call telling her that her 22-year-old daughter Valeria, a medical student, had been shot dead.
