Nicaragua: IACHR warns of increase in repression

Last month the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) warned of an increase in acts of violence and repression to deter public demonstrations in Nicaragua. With no end in sight to the crisis which began mid-April stemming from the crackdown by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) administration led by President Daniel Ortega on opposition protesters, which has left over 500 people dead, the IACHR’s warning follows a “number of serious events” such as new rules announced by the national police (PNN) at the end of September which “qualifies public protest demonstrations as illegal”.
