* The Paraguayan chamber of maquiladora firms (Cemap) has reported that national maquila exports reached US$37.7m in December 2018, a 20% year-on-year increase. According to the Cemap, the December export figures brought the total export figure for 2018 to a record US$675m, a 50% year-on-year increase. The total export figure is higher than the US$600m target that was set by the Cemap at the start of last year and confirms that 2018 was an exceptional year for the sector due to increased demand. The Cemap data shows that 91% of all maquila exports were destined for Southern Common Market (Mercosur) countries led by Brazil and Argentina, with the remainder going to the rest of the world.
