In brief: Panama

* Panama’s government led by President Juan Carlos Varela has announced it will maintain price controls on 22 basic goods for the remaining six months of its term in office which began in July 2014. According to a press release by the Varela government, if the measure (which has been renewed every six months) had not been implemented, the price of a basic basket of goods would cost US$394 – some US$77.95 more than the US$316 that it currently costs.
