Colombia: Condemnation from the US as coca production reaches all-time high

On 2 January, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stood beside Colombia’s president, Iván Duque, in the Caribbean heat of Cartagena to raise an old concern. “The US remains deeply concerned about the surge in coca cultivation and cocaine production in Colombia since 2013,” he announced, “We will continue to work…side-by-side to achieve our joint objectives to cut coca cultivation and cocaine production by 50% between now and 2023.” Latest data compiled by the United Nations show that in 2017 Colombia recorded its highest ever acreage dedicated to coca cultivation.
