Brazil: Criminal gangs drive outbreak of violence in Ceará

The year did not get off to a positive start for the inhabitants of Ceará, a state in north-eastern Brazil which is suffering an ongoing wave of violence that began on 2 January. A display of strength from the all-powerful criminal organisations that operate in Brazil’s third-most violent state, this series of violent attacks represents the first test of the year for the new government of the returning state governor, Camilo Santana.
