Chile: Unrest returns to the Araucanía area

The death of two indigenous Mapuche in Chile’s Southern La Araucanía Region has led to the resurfacing of social unrest in the area. Although the circumstances in which the two men were killed have not been fully cleared up, there are suspicions that the Carabineros militarised police is responsible for the death of one of the victims. The death of the second victim has been linked to the increase in violent activity in the area following the first death. At any rate, the situation in the area is now a matter for concern for the government, which is under pressure to try to restore peace and order.
