PERU: Odebrecht case takes fresh twist

The image of waste water flooding hundreds of houses in the Lima district of San Juan de Lurigancho (SJL), which adorned the front pages of the Peruvian press this week, provided a potent symbol of the repercussions of the bribery scandal involving Brazil’s construction firm Odebrecht and senior Peruvian politicians, including the country’s last four presidents. The cause of the flooding was a ruptured pipeline installed by Odebrecht as part of a contract it allegedly won through bribes: the construction of a metro line in Lima during the presidency of Alan García (2006-2011).
