* Paraguay’s deputy industry & commerce minister, Luis Llamosas, has said that the government is considering imposing “licenses that would regulate the importation of foreign products”, due to the devaluation of the Argentine and Brazilian currencies. However, Llamosas indicated that the implementation of such measures “would depend on how the monetary crises in neighbouring countries are being resolved”. While avoiding the term ‘dumping’, Llamosas acknowledged that cheaper products produce a “context of inequality” that affects all sectors of the Paraguayan industry. On a positive note, Llamosas stated that the Paraguayan maquiladora sector had become “one of the most powerful tools for generating jobs”, with exports reaching close to US$700m in 2018, a 40% year-on-year increase.
