Carabineros face major restructure after second scandal in a year

As the institution lurches from one crisis to another, the fissures within Chile’s Carabineros, the country’s militarised police force, continue to deepen. The Carabineros has long been one of Chile’s most respected institutions. However, its judicial independence and respect for the political process have both been called into question and it now faces calls for profound reform while it wrestles with the downward spiral of its reputation. As Chileans protest and politicians call for transformation, it has become abundantly clear that the time has come to reconsider how the country is policed and address to whom the Carabineros are accountable.
