Bolsonaro puts the Brazilian Amazon in the spotlight

Spanning nine South American countries, the Amazon rainforest is known globally as the ‘lungs of the world’. Brazil is home to around 65% of this forest, which makes up over half of its national territory. Yet the Amazon largely remains a far-away and enigmatic place for foreigners and Brazilians alike, the ambit of indigenous peoples, scientists, explorers, and exploiters.
