In brief: Chile

* Chile’s chamber of commerce (CNC) has reported that online sales were up 39.4% in 2018 – 7.8 percentage points higher than in 2017. The second half of 2018 showed a historic increase of 41.8%, driven mainly by strong growth recorded in the last quarter (44.2%). According to the CNC report, the biggest increase came from the services industry (clinics, education, banking, real estate, among others) which saw annual growth of 41.9% in 2018. This was followed by e-commerce (36.6%) while tourism & entertainment saw growth of 30.7%. Bernadita Silva, head of research at the CNC, stated that “online sales continue to grow exponentially…today we are more connected than ever, and new technologies have given way to a new form of exchange where we have consumers with increasingly less time and who begin to adopt this channel of purchase with less distrust”.
