In brief: Dominican Republic

* Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has paid a visit to the Dominican Republic (DR) where he met President Danilo Medina. The two pledged to strengthen economic relations, trade, and investment between the two countries, signing a memorandum of understanding to establish a new joint working group which would prioritise the promotion of trade, investment, and the productive chain. According to the most recent (November 2018) figures from Spain’s economic and trade office in Santa Domingo, DR exports to Spain totalled €87m (US$100m) in 2017 while imports to the DR from Spain totalled €664m. The same report showed that Spain was the third largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) to the DR in 2017 (after the US and Canada) providing US$206m.
