Desertion crisis a crucial test for López Obrador’s national guard

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s proposal to establish a national guard came as a surprise to many, after his campaign promises to demilitarise Mexico’s fight against organised crime and drug trafficking. The proposal has not been helped by the release of the latest statistics on one of the longest-running problems for Mexico’s armed forces: the number of desertions increased once again in 2018, with the issue felt particularly acutely in areas where the government has been trying hardest to clamp down on organised crime.
