REGION: Northern Triangle customs union promises increased regional integration

Although Central America’s news cycle was dominated by migration and crisis in 2018, several promising infrastructural developments and the inauguration of an ambitious free trade zone have seen advances towards more substantial regional economic integration. In August 2018, Honduras’s President Juan Orlando Hernández held a press conference in the capital Tegucigalpa together with his Guatemalan and Salvadoran counterparts, Jimmy Morales and Salvador Sánchez Cerén, to announce the gradual accession of El Salvador to a tripartite Northern Triangle customs union.
