Populism against crime: where are Brazil and Mexico heading?

By the size of their populations and economies Brazil and Mexico are the two Latin American giants. They also suffer some of the world’s highest crime rates. Two new presidents, a populist of the right (Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil) and a populist of the left (Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico) are promising a major crackdown on crime. Despite differences in approach, both are relying on the military. Here we look at the background and suggest some possible outcomes.
