Venezuela-Region: Resurgent diseases in Venezuela pose health risk for region

Venezuela’s political, economic and humanitarian crisis has led to a re-emergence of previously eradicated or controlled infectious diseases. As the number of Venezuelans fleeing their country rises – the International Organization for Migration (IOM) put the number of Venezuelan migrants at over 3m in November 2018 – so too does the risk of these infectious diseases spreading through the destination countries. This adds to the challenges of governments across Latin America and the Caribbean, who have together received at least 2.4m Venezuelans, as they struggle to provide adequate healthcare and vaccination to the constant flow of migrants.
